What this does
Items speed up estimates, invoices, bills, and purchase orders and ensure each line posts to the right income or expense account.
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Service | Work you perform. No quantity on hand. |
| Non-inventory item | Something you sell or buy but don’t track quantities for. |
| Inventory item | A product whose quantity and cost you track. |

How to
Create an item
- 1Open Sales → Products & Services → New.
- 2Choose Service, Non-inventory, or Inventory.
- 3Enter name, SKU (optional), sales price, and income account.
- 4For purchased items, enter a cost and expense or COGS account.
- 5Set whether it is taxable, then save.
Common mistakes
- Using a single generic item for everything, which makes sales reports meaningless.
- Choosing Inventory for items you don’t physically stock.
